I am a graduate of Clemson University, receiving a Bachelors of Art in Architecture. While completing my undergraduate degree I interned with Boudreaux Group in Columbia, SC. There I gained hands on experience focusing on commercial, religious, and educational facilities.
After completing a rigorous undergraduate degree, I was looking for an experience that would allow me to live in a new place, and expand my knowledge in areas outside of architecture. The prospect of learning a new language and living in a far off place compelled me to join the United States Peace Corps, serving in East Timor.
While in Timor, I worked alongside rural communities and local craftsmen, constructing collaborative community projects. The line between architect and tradesmen was often blurred. I was involved in all aspects of the design and construction; it was a combined effort from the community, craftsman, and architect. Every member of my small community had contributed something, including the children. I can remember the first day we began pouring the foundation of a school; six year old children formed a line passing buckets filled with concrete. They were so happy to be given a role in the project. As a result of the collaborative process everyone felt a degree of ownership, not often found in their culture.
In the end, we constructed a three-classroom school and we all felt proud. And, the community learned techniques they could use to ensure their buildings would stand the test of time. From the local tradesman I gained a better understanding of jointary and ancient techniques untouched by our modern technology. I saw for the first time how important it is for the architect and craftsman to work together to create a much more cohesive project.
When I first returned to the States, I was looking for a job that would allow me to continue the design and project management work I had started while working in Timor. While interviewing I found that Meadors was unlike the other companies I considered. They were truly a design/build firm, taking the project from the conceptual through every finish detail. I felt that their diverse and flexible environment would allow me to thrive and become a more informed architect. For this reason I joined Meadors. |
